No muni crash, says Moody's chief |

The CEO of Moody's, the rating agency, expects "distress" in the municipal bond market, but no crash of the sort that would shake the financial system
“There may be additional defaults in the municipal sector. There certainly is going to be distress in the municipal sector,” Raymond McDaniel said in an interview with the Financial Times. “But we differentiate that from a broad-based systemic problem."
That should be of limited comfort, given that Moody's also didn't forsee the crash in the mortgage bond market in 2008, and gave A ratings to bonds that should have been rated junk.
Still, McDaniel points out an upside to the default scare that has shriveled muni bond prices in recent weeks. It's made people pay attention to the possibility of trouble in what had been considered safe investments, and made investors differentiate between bond issuers. Paying attention now should ease the temptation to panic on bad news.
