Municipal Bonds Begin to Reclaim Their Reputation |

MUNICIPAL bond portfolios can be about as exciting as the kiddie rides at a local carnival. But last year bondholders may have felt as if they were riding over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
“There was an almost total meltdown of the municipal bond fund market in 2008,” said Rob Williams, director of fixed income at the Schwab Center for Financial Research. This may have startled municipal bondholders more than other investors, he said, because “muni bond investors are generally looking for safety.”
With the economic uncertainty continuing and frightening financial data emerging regularly, is it possible to construct a safe and stable muni portfolio? Yes, say a number ofinvestment executives.
Investors should stick with high-quality munis, includingbonds issued by state governments, well-run cities and agencies that provide essential services like water, power and mass transit, said Aaron Gurwitz, the chief investment
