Want To Invest Like Pimco? Try These EM Bond ETFs |
benzinga.com - March 21, 2011 - By The ETF Professor
Alright, let's get the legal stuff out of the way first: This piece is merely a hypothesis regarding some emerging market bond ETFs investors might find attractive following a Bloomberg News article that bond giant Pimco is doing some shopping among emerging markets debt.
To be clear, Pimco did not tell us that it recommends the ETFs we'll highlight here. We merely know that Mark Kiesel, Pimco's global head of corporate bond portfolio management, published a report available on Pimco's Web site entitled "Rising Stars" that highlights opportunities in EM debt universe.
Kiesel writes in that report: "We believe investments which are tied to emerging markets should outperform those in developed markets due to longer-term secular factors that support emerging markets. These secular features include lower public and private sector leverage, expanding credit availability, improving education and infrastructure, and favorable consumer and demographic trends."
So let's have a look at some EM debt-based ETFs that could help an investor capture the thesis Pimco has outlined.
1) WisdomTree Asia Local Debt Fund (NYSE: ALD): This newly minted actively managed ETF made its debut last week and is intriguing because it offers a two-tier investment strategy. Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Australia have weightings of 11.1% each while New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, China and the Philippines get allocations of 5.6% each. WisdomTree plans to evaluate those allocations on a quarterly basis.
