To Stay AAA, America Has To Act |
Forbes.com - April 18, 2011 - by Stephen Pope
Have we been blindsided? Whilst most of us were busy watching the debate in Europe as to whether or not the Greek nation was about to seek a debt rescheduling the rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P), said this morning it reaffirmed the USA’s long term AAA sovereign credit status and A-1+ short-term rating. However, it tagged the rating on outlook with negative implications.
What did S&P offer up as an explanation for its actions?
It cited the positive aspects of the US economy, i.e. its high level of flexibility, independent central bank (The Federal Reserve or Fed), and the ensuing effective monetary policy that has lent support to growth while containing inflationary pressures. It also noted that despite several attempts to undermine the Dollar as the leading reserve currency, the “Greenback” still carries a preference in the world given the transparency of US Dollar asset markets and the incredible liquidity both at home and abroad.
Of course in the immediate aftermath of the 2007 financial crisis the ratings agencies were under pressure as they had freely dished out “AAA” ratings on all manner of synthetic structured products. Since then they have had to sharpen up their act and if it is good enough to downgrade European nations that struggle under a debt burden then in a quid pro quo gesture the US has received a shot across the bows, although we are far from a direct hit.
