If you want income with some inflation protection, consider closed-end funds owning TIPS and convertible securities.
Closed-end funds and exchange-traded funds are invading the income securities world. For many investors they are more convenient than individual bonds and preferreds and more transparent and liquid than open-end mutual funds.
There is an important difference between closed-ends and their ETF cousins. Closed-ends have a fixed number of shares outstanding, and the share price is determined by supply and demand. So the price you pay for a share (or the price you get on exit) can be higher or lower than the net assets behind the share. ETF shares, in contrast, are constantly being created and extinguished in response to supply and demand. So their prices stick pretty close to net asset value.
