Moody's Cuts Portugal To Junk |
Dow Jones, July 5, 2011
Portugal received a serious blow Tuesday after Moody's downgraded its sovereign debt rating to junk status, saying just like Greece, it will likely require further aid.
Moody's was the first rating agency to lower Portugal's debt to junk, prompting fears more downgrades are possible.
Portugal's finance ministry was quick to react, saying the downgrade doesn't take into consideration recent moves it has taken to accelerate budget deficit cuts, seen as key for the bailout success.
Last week, new Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho announced the government will impose a one-time special tax in 2011 to boost fiscal revenue and allow it meet deficit targets for the year.
In a statement, the Finance Ministry said steps it is taking "undeniably provide favorable conditions for all the objectives agreed with European and international partners to be fulfilled."
