Corporate-Bond Pipeline Wide Open, Unless You’re Selling Junk Bonds |

A brief period of relative market calm has investment-grade companies scrambling to the bond market to borrow money. But the junk-bond pipeline is still clogged.
The list of bond issuers today includes AT&T, San Diego Gas & Electric, Occidental Petroleum, Progress Energy and Kinross Gold, according to Ian Lyngen at CRT Capital. All are investment grade.
It may seem a little surprising to see any corporate borrowers hitting the market, given that corporate-bond spreads against safe-haven Treasurys have widened in recent days. But rates are still historically low, especially for investment-grade borrowers.
High-yield spreads have blown out a good bit more, and junk borrowers have been scarce, Standard & Poor’s fixed-income analysts note today.
In that note, S&P analysts offer one explanation for the shutdown of new junk debt, and it does not include S&P’s downgrade of the United States, which some observers thought would raise borrowing costs for companies: For the complete article.
