2012 Emerging Markets Outlook: BofA Sees Double-Digit Corporate Yields |
BARRON'S - Dec. 20, 2011 - By Michael Aneiro
Bank of America Merrill Lynch says it expects attractive returns in 2012 for emerging market corporate bonds despite an expected deceleration in global GDP growth. BofA forecasts a 10.5% return in EM corporates overall, 8.7% in emerging-market investment-grade bonds and 15% in EM high yield. This compares to BofA’s 3.8% and 12% return forecasts in the US IG and HY respectively.
BofA Merrill Lynch’seconomics team sees a 50% chance of a mild recession in Europe, along with modest yet still positive growth in the US, while GDP growth in EM countries is expected to drop from 6.3% to 5.5% during 2012. A more pessimistic scenario would be a recession in both the U.S. and Europe, to which BofA assigns a 40% probability, saying EM corporate returns would also be lower under this scenario.
