History of the Australian Silver Florin

Australian Silver Florin Coin Review

The history of the Florin traces back hundreds of years. Edward III, King of England between 1327 and 1377 issued the first Florin in 1344. The first Australian Florin was minted in 1910, matching the size and weight of Florins of the United Kingdom. The original Australian Florin has a value of 24 pence.

Between 1910 and 1945, Australian Florins has a .925 content of sterling silver. They weighed about 1/3-ounce. In the years between 1946 and 1963, the silver content of the coin was decreased to just 50% silver.

1963 was the last year that the Australian Florin was minted. The country was preparing for decimalization, or a transition to a decimal currency.

Recently, in 2021, The Perth Mint created a newer version of the Australian Florin. The silver version has a face value of $2 Australian Dollars and a weight of 2 troy ounces. It is made from 99.99% pure silver.

The obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait, by Jody Clark, is well-recognized and referred to as the "fifth portrait" of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is looking to the right of the coin, adorned in her drown and a necklace. She is centered along the bottom half of the coin.

Above the Queen's head, there is a smaller portrait of King Edward VIII, fondly known as the "soldier prince" to Australians. His portrait was added to the coin to pay homage to the courage he displayed during World War I.

A circular border surrounds the two portraits on the obverse of the Coin. It reads "Elizabeth II Australia" and lists the weight and purity level (2 oz 9999 Ag), year, and face value ($2 Australian dollars).

The coin's reverse depicts the 1908 coat of arms of Australia (the first coat of arms designed for the Commonwealth). The design features a kangaroo and an emu holding up a shield. The shield displays the Cross of St. George and displays five stars to represent the five Australian states.

"Advance Australia" is written on a banner beneath the coat of arms, and the seven-point star of Federation is shown above it. Additionally, the year 1910 is marked on the reverse to commemorate the original minting date of the first Australian Florins.
