Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin at a Glance
History of the Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin
The Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin is a relatively new coin from The Perth Mint in Australia. The Spotted Eagle Ray is a protected species in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, making them a treasured animal. This status is part of the reason the Spotted Eagle Ray was selected for this special Australian silver coin design.
Spotted Eagle Rays belong to the family Myliobatidae. In addition to the waters of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, they can also be found in other tropic waters in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
Spotted Eagle Rays have white spots covering their darker skin, which makes them easy to distinguish from other rays. They also have a long tail with barbed stingers, which are venomous. Spotted Eagle Rays may be seen jumping out from the water and may even end up leaping into a boat on occasion. While Spotted Eagle Rays sometimes swim as a group, they tend to swim on their own most of the time.
In addition to this Silver Australian Spotted Eagle Ray coin, The Perth Mint also made a ΒΌ-ounce gold coin with an identical design.
Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin Design
Take one look at the Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin and you'll be impressed with its detail and beauty. Read on to learn more about the designs on the obverse and reverse of the coin.
Obverse
An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the Australian Spotted Eagle Coin. This portrait, well-known as the "fifth portrait" is by Jody Clark. It shows the queen wearing the crown she wore for her Coronation, known as the Royal Diamond Diadem crown. In the portrait, the Queen is facing the right.
Above the Queen's portrait, the coin reads Elizabeth II Australia. The base of the coin lists the weight (1 1/2-ounce), purity level (9999 Ag), date, and face value ($2 Australian Dollars).
Reverse
As you can probably guess, the Spotted Eagle Ray is the featured image on the back of the coin. The ray is shown swimming in the ocean with his fins up to make it look as if he were gliding along. Along one of the wings (the one where you can see the upper side), numerous dots are visible to show the white spots on this magnificent creature.
Below the swimming ray, the revers of the coin says "Australian Spotted Eagle Ray." A "P" is stamped at the base of the coin as well for The Perth Mint and NM is inscribed on the top left tip of the wing, standing for Natasha Muhl, the designer.
What Is the Value of an Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin?
The value of an Australian Spotted Eagle Ray Silver Coin will vary depending on the current silver spot price. While silver coins may be worth a bit more than the spot price, there is a clear correlation between the two values.
