Silver Osprey Coin at a Glance
Silver Osprey Coin Design
Once you take a look at the silver Osprey coin, we think you'll agree that it is a truly spectacular piece. Continue reading to explore the coin's obverse and reverse designs.
An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as is customary with other Australian currency, is featured on the obverse of this silver coin. This portrait was designed by Jody Clark and is an adaptation of his design which is featured on currency in the United Kingdom.
The effigy of the Queen is a side profile, showing her facing the right. Atop her head is a diamond diadem crown. The Queen is also shown wearing the Victorian Coronation necklace around her neck. This contrasts with the design on the UK coins, where you cannot see the Queen's shoulders or any necklaces around her neck.
Written around the Queen's effigy is "Elizabeth II; Australia; 2 Dollars; 1 ½ Oz 9999 Ag."
The reverse of this coin is where things get truly exciting. A majestic osprey is shown snatching a fish out of the water while in mid-flight. The detailed drawing clearly depicts the bird's talons around the fish, each of the feathers on the osprey's wings, and the splashing water below the osprey and the fish. You can also clearly sense the osprey's power and presence with his strong eyes and sharp beak.
The coin's issue year and "Osprey" are written in the circular border surround the image.
Silver Osprey Coin Value
If you look at the obverse of this coin, it will tell you that it has a face value of $2 (Australian dollars). However, knowing that this is a 1 ½-ounce 99.99% pure silver coin, it should be immediately clear that the coin's actual value is much higher. As a highly-sought after precious metal, silver is quite valuable.
The exact spot price of silver fluctuates, however, so we are unable to put a specific value for this coin in this article. If you'd like to get a ballpark idea for the coin's current value, search for the spot price of silver (which is based on 1 ounce). Remember that this is a 1 ½ ounce coin, so its approximate value should be 50% more than the spot price.
It is also important to note that coins are often worth more than simply their weight in silver. A coin's design, rarity, supply, demand, and other factors can all impact its value.

Adding Silver Osprey Coins to a Precious Metals IRA
Have you heard of a Silver IRA? It is a type of Self-Directed IRA that lets you hold silver (or gold, platinum, and palladium) in a retirement account. With a Silver IRA, you get to benefit from the tax breaks IRA holders receive, while also diversifying your portfolio and protecting yourself against volatility in the stock market.
The IRS has established key criteria that must be satisfied in order to add any precious metals to an IRA. Silver coins and bar, for instance, must have a minimum purity level of 99.9% silver.
The Silver Osprey Coin is made with 99.99% pure silver. Because this is higher than the minimum established by the IRS, the Silver Osprey coin is an IRA-approved option you can add to your portfolio.
If you haven't already set up a Precious Metals IRA, you'll want to work with a precious metals provider and an IRA custodian company. They can walk you through everything you'll need to do to get your account set up and funded, and then add the coins or bars you'd like to invest in.
